The first idea of a reactive target came in 1991 when John Green developed the Gnat, a radio controlled target system. From this came the realisation that shooters needed a hit recognition target which could be used with all different types of weapons, i.e. shotguns, air rifles, rim fire and centre rifles. After some years of research and development the Firebird finally received Classification from the Health and Safety Executive in March 2010. The Firebird Target had to satisfy the requirements of the HSE whilst still maintaining the required sensitivity to react to relatively low velocity projectiles, such as air rifle pellets. Over the last two years the Firebird has been used by several shooting clubs throughout the UK as an exciting hit recognition tool and has been used by specialist units of the military and police in a number of different countries. After listening to feedback, Firebird have now developed a special quiet target for use with Air Rifles, aptly named the Airflash Quiet. This target is produced in both a 65mm and 40 mm size and needs a Magplate (magnetic target holder) to ensure the desired effect, i.e. white smoke, pyrotechnic effect and a small report. Firebird are also excited to announce that a target specially designed for Archery will be available soon, as well as a target specially designed for Airsoft.
